The DSJ strengthens learners in their development towards becoming self-assured and independent individuals, while also encouraging critical thinking, which promotes their methodological and social competencies.
As per requirements from the German Government, who financially support the school, German is a compulsory subject for all age groups.

The DSJ Support Fund
In 1989, the DSJ made a commitment to counteract the extreme inequality that prevailed in South Africa’s education sector by founding the innovative Integrated Secondary School Programme (ISEK). Through the programme, Germany to this day supports a number of learners from partner schools in Soweto who distinguish themselves from their peers through their exemplary academic achievements.
A group of learners first attend lessons at the DSJ on Saturdays before a few are selected to attend the DSJ full time from Grade 5 onwards. In some cases Germany supports these learners with a large fee reduction until they matriculate.
While the ISEC programme covers the educational needs of its learners, some other pressing needs that directly affect the learning ability of each learner go unmet. By far the greatest need is for daily meals. The majority of the budget is therefore used to finance breakfasts and lunches for learners whose parents face severe financial difficulties.
Currently this amounts to R40 per learner per day, or about R800 per month. In addition, the Support Fund also steps in when reading glasses, second-hand school uniforms, school materials or rides home after evening events cannot be financed. The negative impact of the lack of these basic items on the learners’ education cannot be overstated. We appreciate your help in fulfilling this need and contributing to making education more equal.

Student Exchange programme 2026
For the first time in 2026 we have three groups going to Germany on a two week student exchange programme. Our longest-standing exchange programme is with the Rupert-Neß-Gymnasium in Wangen im Allgäu. Since 2024 we have been privileged to have an exchange programme with the Kooperative Gesamtschule Moringen in Lower Saxony. This year we are in the fortunate position that a third group can travel to the Gymnasium Schloß Neuhaus in Paderborn. In total 39 learners are participating, accompanied by 6 teachers (two per group). Hopefully we can expand this programme to enable as many learners as possible to participate.
Our thanks go to our regular sponsors, Stiftung Deutsche Bildung, who supported 18 deserving learners this year across all three groups. Our partner schools are involved in getting additional funds from the “Pädagogischer Austauschdient”, who sponsor a limited portion of the travel costs annually, depending on available finances.
The student exchange programme is of immense value to all participants, creating a wonderful opportunity to expand horizons and using the German language. Wiht this programme we build a bridge between Germany and South Africa.
