Monday 17 October 2016: a day that our Class of 2016 will not forget in a hurry. A blur of celebration and reflection, emotion and optimism, as well as anxiety and anticipation.
An unusually crammed calendar meant that this year’s Formal and Informal Valedictions happened on the same day. After the traditional ‘re-allocation’ of certain school infrastructure on Sunday evening, our learners arrived back at the DSJ in party mode. They made their way onto the grounds at 13h00 to enjoy an informal celebration with the staff and school in the Amphitheatre.
It was then time to time to neaten up for the Formal Valediction. This evening has always carried immense importance for Grade 12 learners, perhaps a lot more than they realise, as it marks the final occasion that they will all be under one roof together in their school uniform and as ‘schoolboys’ and ‘schoolgirls’.
The Class of 2016 has been one of the biggest, in terms of size, that the DSJ has had in recent years and this added a greater sense of excitement to the evening. Valedictions are all about celebrating success and it was no different this time around. The Aula was packed with parents, family and friends as we bid a fond farewell to our Class of 2016.
