The Olympiade Committee first met in September 2012 to begin preparations for the 15th Olympiade of the five German Schools in southern Africa. There were a number of setbacks along the way but everybody pulled through to produce a wonderful event. Even the poor weather subsided for the week to allow our athletes to shine (even though we had move some of the sporting codes off DSJ premises)
On the field, the DSJ managed to win the swimming but performances on the athletics track and in the ball games were not up to scratch and we had to settle for third place overall. While results didn’t go the way of the DSJ, the school community should be immensely proud of themselves as we were gracious hosts. The Olympiade also brought together many different elements of the DSJ and created a sense of unity throughout the school.
An event of such magnitude would not have been possible without the contributions of some important individuals and groups: the Olympiade Committee (especially Johannes and Anja Gutmayer for their tireless efforts), the parents who hosted visiting athletes, the DSJ staff, Jana Stölting, the Music Department and Mandy Newell who put hours of practice into the Opening Ceremony event, the teachers and learners who were part of ‘Egoli’ and sacrificed many weekends rehearsing, the Marketing Department, Verwaltung, Cornelia Kohler and her catering team, Melanie Konrad, Katy Mellor, the various sponsors, the Sports Department, Shawn Raubach and his Maintenance Staff for their excellent service and all DSJ Staff for their contribution.
