The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg recently hosted the first Interschools Robotics League (ISRL) competition of 2025. With a total of 14 schools and 176 learners from grades 5 to 10, the Aula was abuzz with activity and excitement. Upon arrival, participants were paired with a learner from another school. This new team has to then collaborate and solve problems using a physically built robot. No pre-written code is allowed.
Learners were required to code their robots to autonomously perform the entire series of tasks for points. A table judge ensures rules are adhered to and scores the tasks performed. No outside interference is allowed.
The theme of this first ISRL competition was “Fire Rescue!”. Some of the tasks the learners’ robots had to complete were: Rescue animals from the fire, extinguish fires, rescue a person who got disorientated and use your sensors to follow a line on the ground through “thick smoke”.
It was satisfying to see how our learners grew in their problem-solving skills, but moreover, their interpersonal skills.
Our Advanced Level Robotics Engineers will take on the Advanced ISRL competition next week, Tuesday 11 March at St. Peters Girls Prep. We wish them well.
A big thank you to everyone involved in the preparation of the venue and the event. We look forward to hosting many more!
