At the beginning of the fourth term, a competition was launched for the school classes to find a name for our new school mascot, a meerkat. Whilst in their Afrikaans lesson with Mrs van Heerden, the learners of Grade 6c discussed the traits of meerkats and came up with the perfect name: Was-Was. Known for their curiosity, intelligence, and strong sense of community, meerkats work as a unit, where tasks are shared amongst all and adults assist in raising the young, not only the parents. Meerkats are always on alert and when faced with danger, they stand united as a group, using their loud vocalizations to warn each other and stay safe.

Our DSJ Community, and Was-Was, reflects these qualities—curious and caring, with a strong sense of community and always looking out for one another.
Congratulations to Grade 6c and Mrs van Heerden, who received our very first Was-Was mascot from Mrs Döring.
