Last term our Grade 11 and 12s joined a virtual Careers Day, with 25 presenters from a large variety of career fields such as education, IT and Gaming and General Engineering.
Julian Hewitt (education) from the Jakes Gerwell Fellowship explained to the DSJ learners how teachers will be at the forefront of innovation and leading to change. He also said that the quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers. Expert teachers must however be nurtured to become the instrument of change. The Jakes Gerwell Fellowship wants to provide the greatest possible support to our best students to become our best teachers.
Shazia Labhadur (IT and gaming) shared with our learners that how in the future, science and technology will be data driven, using digital technologies and innovation and how we will use coding, engineering design, programming and robotics in all aspects of work. She explained how companies do planning through simulation games.
Robert Jacobsz (general engineering) discussed the science and technology of engineering. He explained to the grade 11 and 12 learners how engineering links with design, building, maintenance and the use of engines, machines and structures. Engineering can focus on electrical, chemical, mechanical, civil, architecture and computer engineering. He explained that engineering is closely linked to environmental, economic, legal, social and political contexts.
