The National Lockdown in South Africa proved to be one of the most daunting challenges in our time and following (what felt like) an eternity, authorities allowed for limited exercise to happen again.
There were many restless and frustrated folks around and this was where the idea of the Bewegungs-Challenge originated. We launched the challenge on Monday, 11 May 2020 and if I must be honest, I had very little expectations, which can sometimes be a blessing.
The response was outstanding, with over 300 participants across 94 pledges, in what became the school’s very first virtual event in our 130-year history.
We had branded the challenge as a fundraiser for Covid-19 safety measures but it was so much more than that. Supporters from all over the world participated and there was a great sense of community, even though we were all apart.
Our participants also proved to be very creative. Whilst the majority ran, walked or cycled, some braved the cold and swam, rowed and even used a trampoline to get active and support the cause.
While it would have been awesome to see everybody in person, this was the next best thing and we managed to raise just over R50 000 on the day.
A big thank you to our community and my colleague, Annette Holtmann, for all her efforts!
