#Basar17

The 2016 edition of our annual Schulbasar marked the beginning of a new era and this year’s event was all about building and improving on these foundations. The successful tag line of ‘The Ultimate German Experience’ remained from a marketing point of view while we looked to introduce the concept of ‘The Ultimate Community Fundraiser’ as the slogan from an internal perspective.

Planning for #Basar17 commenced as early as September 2016. We visited our ‘neighbours’ at the DSP to discuss their Oktoberfest and we met with numerous service providers to get their input as aimed to streamline the school’s biggest fundraiser.

Another topic that carried importance was to ensure that the Basar became commercially viable and relevant and we raised the stakes in 2017 with some big names entering the fray. Standard Bank jumped on board, Mercedes-Benz Bryanston became more involved and Windhoek Beer were our title sponsors.

From an internal point of view, we scrapped the old market area for the Heritage Village, the Theatercafe and Strassencafe made way for a ‘super café’ in the Seilzirkus area, the German Village was bolstered and class stands were chosen by us with the aim of simplifying the process and maximising profits.

Added to this was the biggest challenge of all: scrapping tokens, taking the plunge and making the Basar a completely cashless event. Tokens had definitely served their purpose but with the increased risk of theft that had become associated with them, it was time to ‘tighten the screws’.

The day itself certainly didn’t disappoint with the initial cold morning being burnt off by a warm sun. We attracted one of the biggest crowds in recent history with over 9000 tickets issued for the day.

While 2017 will be remembered for many things, perhaps its biggest legacy is that the school ‘took ownership’ of the event again.
