07 May 2015

The date: Saturday 23 May 2015
The event: 108th annual Schulbasar
The significance: The year of our 125 year anniversary.

After a rather warm start to Autumn and Winter, Saturday morning started off cloudy and cold as the gates opened for this very special Schulbasar. Fortunately the clouds subsided at around 11h00 and the sun shone through allowing for a warm afternoon. The Schulbasar has gained a reputation as an event which caters for the whole family and in 2015 we were able to continue this fine tradition as we welcomed a healthy crowd through the gates.

An event of mass magnitude, the Basar is really something to behold.  It relies on the contributions of each and every teacher, parent and learner to make it a success. It is also a day where we present ourselves to the City of Johannesburg.

For the second year running, the Beer Tent area was splashed in yellow courtesy of sponsors Savanna. There were some minor changes with the gig rig truck being replaced by a specially designed stage courtesy of our friends at Monster Productions and ABI. In terms of entertainment, DJ Shawny B kept the crowd happy with some of his best beats. The Dixie Hillbillies proved to be a massive hit while our headliners, Shortstraw, wowed the crowds with their amazing skills.

Our massive food and beverage offering kept our guests happy and fed, from Tasha’s in the Kindergarten all the way through to the stands surrounding the main field. We were able to welcome some old activities back in 2015, both the Rapisplash and Geisterzimmer proved to be hits on the day.

All-in-all, there were over 50 activities on the day which included:
Sand Art, Pandora’s Box, Dartswheel, Milking the Cow, Sandwich Bar, Straßen Café, Fuffi Slide, Seilzirkus, Modeboutique, Geisterzimmer, Kletterwand, Wurstbude, Matjesstand, Ice Cream, Go-Karts, Beauty Farm, Süßigkeiten, Caroussel, Basketball, Wurstbude, Giant Slide, Haribo, Chip ‘n Dip, Rocket, Mobi Can, Mobi Can, Bull Ride, Bungee Bounce, Grass Balls, Hau den Lukas, Hot Dog Stand, Second Hand Book Store, Theater Café, Lamm & Hühnchen, Africa Stand, Beauty Shop, International Café, Rapislash, Heurigen, Altschüler Kneipe, Hamburger Stube, Uber, Toyota, Alphüttli, Hamburger/Kartoffelpuffer, Stir Fry, Cocktails, Jägermeister, Market Place, Amici, Eisbein, Bitburger, Brauhaus am Damm, Savanna, Biltong, Waffles, Crepes, Popcorn, Slush, Citrum, Volkswagen, Drayman’s and PlayStation.

As is the case every year, the day of the Basar flew by and before we all knew it, it was time to reflect on the event that was in the Altschüler Kneipe.

The Basar Raffle Draw took place on Thursday 28 May in the Aula. In 2014 the school raised just under R140000 and in 2015 the aim was to reach R150000. Unfortunately due to a delay in the printing of tickets, we were only able to get them out a month before the Basar and this impacted on sales. Despite this, we still managed a highly respectable figure of R123000.
