Midmar Mile 2017
Following a sabbatical in 2016, the DSJ Midmar Mile Tour made a return to the school calendar in 2017 with a small group of 11 swimmers eager to tackle the 44th edition of this famous event.
Due to the delayed returns from various class trips, we were only able to leave the school at 16h00 and break free from the Joburg traffic around 17h30. After a hasty dinner in Harrismith and taking the ‘scenic route’ (due to the GPS giving us wrong directions) we finally made it to our accommodation at Umgeni Village Nature Reserve in Howick.
The team enjoyed a much-needed rest to recharge their batteries. At breakfast the next morning, it was decided that we would scrap our abseiling activity and head to the beach. It was back into the Sprinter as we headed to Umhlanga for a couple hours of fun. On our way back, we were also able to take in the sights at Howick Falls before the team were given some free time to prepare for Sunday’s challenge.
The morning of the race is always characterised by a lot of nervous energy and this was especially the case this year as more than half of the group were competing in their first race. Some were more nervous than others but overcame their initial fears and each member successfully completed their races. It was then time to pack up and make the long trip back to Johannesburg.
A massive ‘thank you’ to Monika Springer for organising and facilitating the weekend (we missed you), Melanie Böbs for all your help during the weekend, Victor Mfusi for the countless hours spent behind the wheel and to each and every one of the team for an awesome weekend.
See you in 2018!
